Everyone loves New Zealand …and why not?

A chance to build a log home in New Zealand got everyone at North American Log Crafters in gear! From the planning stages to reassembly we enjoyed building a Western Red Cedar log cabin for a terrific client near Queenstown on the South Island.

With natural beauty ranging from rolling green hills to stunning fjords (Lord of the Rings was filmed in Milford Sound), it’s a showstopping country that demands you keep your camera handy. The varied climate has something for everyone, the wine is legendary and the people are as welcoming as the wildlife. (There are no natural predators!)

Building a custom log cabin is a process that takes time

It was no different in the beautiful hills near Cardrona. After looking at many different log home plans, our client found that he could make the most of his budget and his amazing view by working with a draftsman on a custom design. Local regulations required obtaining approvals from adjacent landowners before construction could begin.

Back in Canada, we selected the perfect logs for the project and the physical work of handcrafting a full-scribe log home got underway.

After the log building was finished, the logs were tagged and loaded for the long trip by sea. When two of our men left Canada to meet the shipment in New Zealand it was a rainy day in October.

Rain had been falling in New Zealand, too, and getting the heavy trucks loaded with containers of logs up the muddy driveway took some ingenuity.

The sun broke through as the logs were unloaded. New green leaves covered the trees and birds sang cheerfully. Two days ago it had been Autumn and now it was Spring!

The compact custom log home now looks like it was always part of the countryside. The 15″ thick full scribe cedar log walls maintain a warm and even interior temperature on cold nights: a fact accurately tracked and recorded by the homeowner.

The log home’s unique interior decor expresses the adventurous personality of its creator. Expansive windows and a cozy outdoor living space reveal a great appreciation of the outdoors: the sweeping valley view is as much part of this country cottage as its handcrafted log walls.

We keep in touch with the owner of this compact and efficient log home and appreciate the enthusiastic updates on its function and energy performance.
